The National College "Domenico Cotugno" is located in a big and ancient palace situated in centre of the city developed around the ancient S. Francesco's monastery, of which San Bernardino's da Siena cell, bell tower and refectory still now exist.
College's origins are entangled with the history of educational institutions of XVIII Century and Jesus Company.
With the Jesuit expulsion, instead of "Aquilanorum Collegium" founded in 1596, it was created, on 4 November 1769, the "Real Collegio". Then, with the "Decreto Regio on 31 May 1807 n. 140, Giuseppe Napoleone, Naples' and Sicily's king, founded the "Collegio del Regno", that, on 1 February 1862, with "Unità d'Italia", became National College.
